We have been designing basements since 2001 when they became incredibly popular in London. This was due to massive increase in house prices in central London and it was far more economic to extend down rather than move.

In the early days we worked closely with The London Basement Company, who would recommend two architects - Robert Baxter or George Clarke (of Channel 4 fame). Basement design is about two factors light and a feeling of space, we have all been in dark dingy basement with an array of doors and no natural light.

Our basements use light creatively and the basement feels part of the main house, not an unloved addition. Gaining planning permission for basements has become more problematic, the right approach and knowledge is critical.
